How to Wash a Snapback Cap Without Breaking the Plastic Snaps
Cap Wash & Shape Protector — A reusable cap-washing system designed to support the crown and brim while your washable caps get properly cleaned.
Snapbacks fail in a place most wash guides barely mention: the plastic snap strip at the back. The crown can come through a gentle wash looking fine while one or two snaps have cracked, warped or stopped clicking shut. The snaps are not fabric. They need a lighter touch.
This guide covers how to wash a snapback cap without breaking the plastic snaps — care label first, shape support through the wash, and air-dry only.
Why plastic snaps are the weak point
A snapback's adjustable closure is a row of plastic studs and sockets. Heat, hard bending and tumbling against a drum all stress those parts. Hot water can soften plastic. Fastening the snaps tightly before a wash can load the strip when the fabric shrinks or twists. A dryer or dishwasher adds heat and force the snaps were never designed for.
Treat the closure as a separate part of the cap: support the crown and brim as usual, and protect the snaps from heat, sharp bends and unnecessary tension.
Care label first
Before any wash, read the care label and follow the cap maker's instructions. Some snapbacks are spot-clean only. Some allow cold hand washing. A few are marked for machine washing on a gentle cycle. If the label says not to wash, do not wash — no method in this guide overrides the manufacturer.
If the label is missing or unreadable, start with the gentlest option that still gets the sweatband clean: spot cleaning, then a cool hand wash if needed.
Prep the snaps
- Open the snaps (or leave them very loosely fastened) so the strip is not under tension in the water.
- Check for existing cracks. A snap that is already splitting can finish breaking in the wash; decide whether the cap is worth washing or better retired from hard cleaning.
- Empty the sweatband. Shake out grit so it does not abrade the plastic during washing.
Hand wash (usually the safer path)
For most snapbacks, a cool hand wash is kinder to plastic snaps than a machine.
1. Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent.
2. Dip the cap and gently work the sweatband and stained areas with your fingers. Do not wring the brim or twist the snap strip.
3. Keep the snap strip from being bent sharply backwards or forwards while you wash.
4. Rinse thoroughly in clean cool water until the soap is gone.
5. Press out excess water with a clean towel — press, do not wring.

Spot clean when a full wash is not needed
Not every snapback needs a full soak. If the issue is a salt ring on the sweatband or a mark on the front panel, a damp cloth and mild soap on that area alone can be enough — and it puts zero stress on the snaps. Our guide on how to spot clean a cap without washing covers that path. Save a full wash for when the whole cap needs it.
If you machine wash
Only machine wash if the care label allows it. Use a cold, gentle cycle and a mesh bag. A hat washer cage such as the WASHKIT Cap Wash & Shape Protector supports the crown and brim so the cap is less likely to be crushed or bent in the drum — it is a shape-support tool, not a cleaner, and it does not replace mild detergent or the care label. Position the cap so the snap strip is not jammed against the cage or twisted under a strap.
For machine-specific setup, see hat washer cage washing machine and how to wash a baseball cap in the washing machine. Keep the snap strip open or loose, and skip the dryer.
Air-dry only
Always air-dry a snapback. Do not use a tumble dryer, heater, hair dryer or any direct heat on the plastic snaps or the brim. Heat is one of the fastest ways to warp snaps and soften the brim insert.
- Reshape the crown gently while the cap is damp.
- Let it dry fully on a form, rack or clean towel with good airflow.
- Keep it out of direct sun for long stretches if you care about colour.

After the wash
Once the cap is completely dry, check the snaps gently. They should click without force. If a snap feels brittle or misaligned, stop forcing it. Store the cap with the snaps open or loosely closed so the strip is not under constant tension. Keep the crown supported and the brim free of pressure between wears.
Snapback vs trucker and fitted
Snapbacks share sweat and oil problems with other caps, but the plastic closure is their specific risk. Trucker hats often use a similar snap strip plus a mesh crown — see our trucker hats guide for mesh care without repeating those methods here. Fitted caps have no snaps; their risk is the brim and sweatband, covered in fitted caps.
Quick checklist
- Read the care label first.
- Open or loosen the plastic snaps before washing.
- Prefer a cool hand wash; machine wash only if the label allows.
- Use shape support for the crown and brim if you machine wash; WASHKIT is shape support, not a detergent.
- Air-dry only — no dryer, no dishwasher.
- Do not bend the snap strip sharply while wet.
Keep the snaps as well as the crown
A snapback is only adjustable while the plastic closure still works. Wash gently, protect the strip from heat and tension, and air-dry completely, and the snaps are far more likely to survive as many washes as the fabric.
When you need shape support through washing and air-drying, the WASHKIT Cap Wash & Shape Protector helps hold the crown and brim. Explore more in our Hat Care Guide.
